North Waltham Parish Council

About Us

North Waltham is one of the 51 Parishes in Basingstoke and Deane’s borough. Our role is to act as a link between the village and the other bodies responsible for services to the community, be that Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Hampshire County Council or one of the other statutory organisations.

As the authority most relative to the people, we are invariably the first port of call people go to with their concerns or ideas. For this reason, we are a vital part of any community.
The most common topics parish councils get involved with are planning matters (they are statutory consultees), crime prevention, managing open spaces, and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities.

On their own, parish councils have limited powers to make decisions. However, they do have the ability to negotiate with and the power to influence those other organisations that make the final decisions. The organisations that make the final decisions know that a parish council best reflects how a community feels about something and our views are taken seriously.

Duties & Functions

The duties and functions of a parish council are many and varied. We meet once a month (except in August), and meetings may last up to two hours, depending on the agenda items to be discussed. There is also an Annual Parish Meeting where the Council and many other community groups give a review of the year.

We discuss and decide upon planning applications and any other matters referred to it by residents. Meetings are advertised on the council notice board and the village website, and the public is welcome to attend all meetings.

Residents can bring to the parish council’s attention anything that concerns them, either directly or through the clerk. If matters raised are not the Council’s responsibility, the clerk can bring them to the attention of the proper authority.

All borough, parish and town councillors are required to declare any member interests. Details of our Parish Councillor’s declarations can be found on the Basingstoke and Deane website.
