WI – Nov 2022

by | Nov 19, 2022 | WI

Our last meeting was on Thursday 10th November 2022 – we were entertained by Jackie Dimmock with her humorous descriptions of life as a police officer – Jackie had many stories to tell and they were all beautifully illustrated by her excellent mini quilts – Jackie is also a talented member of the North Hants Quilters.

Jackie’s police career started in March 1982 on the Isle of Wight.  Jackie’s parents had arranged to visit her on the Island one weekend, however, Jackie was sent to Borden, an army base, on the mainland for duty.  She was patrolling the base and after a while needed to answer a call of nature.  After looking around for a suitable spot, Jackie picked a particular bush and was just about to do what she needed to do when a paratrooper appeared out of the very same bush!!  She unfortunately didn’t get to see her parents over the weekend.

Jackie then told us about some of the more unusual calls they received – on one occasion they were contacted by a lady who was concerned that her tomato plants didn’t have any tomatoes.  It is often easier to go to such calls and on this occasion, it transpired that the neighbours had taken the tomato plants out of her grow bag and replaced them with cannabis – no wonder there were no tomatoes!!

During her career Jackie worked as the Primary School Liaison Officer so spent a lot of time talking with children.  One pupil asked her if she was tired and when Jackie said not really, they said “but aren’t you working 24/7, 365 days” – they thought that this was what all police officers worked!  Another pupil, when being shown the police handcuffs, said “my Mum has some pink handcuffs”!!  In 30 years of police service Jackie only used her handcuffs once.

Jackie’s talk was very entertaining and informative cleverly illustrated by her wonderful quilts.

Our forthcoming meetings are:

Thursday 8th December 2022:  Christmas Party with Majestic Wines – a return visit to help us understand wine and food pairing as we approached the festive season.

Thursday 12th January 2023:  learn about the benefits of Paracise with local teacher, Beth Buchanan.  Paracise is a low impact, low intensity exercise to music that is ideal for those who find regular fitness classes too demanding.  Come along to find out more about Paracise and try out a few moves.
