Countdown to the North Waltham Street Party

by | Apr 23, 2023 | Village News

Why party at the pond?

It’s at the centre of the village and it’s been there centuries.

The pond is a great place for North Waltham to celebrate the Coronation because it’s where the village as we know it today actually started. In fact the pond is the reason North Waltham is here.

The first settlement was near the Wheatsheaf Hotel on an ancient road, roughly on the line of today’s A33. But when passing trade declined with the collapse of the Roman Empire, the inhabitants returned to an agricultural way of life and moved lock, stock and barrel to where there was a natural pond providing water for livestock and crops. The only known relic from the past is the remains of a roman villa in a field near the main road.

So, having a great story to tell, our pond is the perfect spot to celebrate together!
